"Writing like an onion" (https://www.nicoleroccas.com/005-2/) is possibly the best writing advice I've ever heard. The podcast host thinks this doesn't work for writing fiction, but actually it totally does. It's just another way of describing one aspect of Lisa Cron's "Story Genius" method. (For those of you who talk to me in person, she's the one I call "novel writing lady.")
